God Light
Sunlight Sonlight
by Robert Lloyd Russell

Christian - Non Fiction
5-STAR Review - 05/27/2013

Book Review

This book is very well-written and formatted.  At the end of each chapter, the Sunlight\Sonlight parallels are explained, and there is a Think and Grow section with a few questions to answer.  “God Light” could easily be used as a personal Bible study, or a study for small groups or Sunday school class. ... it is easy to read and understand.  Each chapter is pretty short so that it can be read and discussed in one sitting.  I highly recommend “God Light” to help with any type of Bible study.

Frequent summaries, parallels between sunlight and Sonlight, rich applications, and implications add to the user-friendly format used throughout the book and are reinforced with thorough Biblical referenced documentation.

The comprehensive bibliography, scripture index, and end notes add to the value of God Light: Sunlight Sonlight as a ready reference for further reading, future study, and as a resource for suggested reading for Seminary, Bible School, and serious lay Bible study.

God Light: Sunlight Sonlight by Robert Lloyd Russell is destined to become a classic in contemporary studies on the character of God.

Robert Lloyd Russell starts with the statement in John's gospel that “God is Light” (John 1:5), and proceeds to embark on a voyage of discovery as to the meaning behind these three words.  In writing this book he fills a void in our theological and literary knowledge, for as he states in the Preface, “precious little has been penned about God is light.”  Russell causes the reader to associate spiritual light with natural light, and in so doing, he helps our minds to become more open to a deeper understanding of the spiritual aspects of God’s divine light — the Shekinah glory of God that we find shining through His Son.

Apostle John’s statement in I John 1:5, “God Is Light,” intrigued this author enough to start questioning just what John really meant by these three words.  Having studied physical light, Robert Russell started to understand that some of the characteristics of physical light help us to understand God’s nature and give us new meaning to the phrase in I John.  Therefore Russell writes this book giving us parallels between natural physical light and spiritual light to help us understand what the real meaning of this three-word phrase is.  “God is Light” is chock-full of information about how God is Light.  It is in three parts: ‘Sunlight Sonlight Attributes,’ showing us the character of God; ‘Sunlight Sonlight of the World,’ an overview of light in scriptures; and ‘Sunlight Sonlight Interactions,’ application to what we have learned.  I have heard this phrase all of my life, and I never dreamed of it being so involved and never bothered to know what this is all about.

This book is very well-written and formatted.  At the end of each chapter, the Sunlight\Sonlight parallels are explained, and there is a Think and Grow section with a few questions to answer.  “God Light” could easily be used as a personal Bible study, or a study for small groups or Sunday school class.  Though there is a lot of information, on account of the way the book is written, it is easy to read and understand.  Each chapter is pretty short so that it can be read and discussed in one sitting.  I highly recommend “God Light” to help with any type of Bible study.

Award-winning author Robert Lloyd Russell identifies, contrasts, and illustrates parallels between natural and spiritual light in God Light: Sunlight Sonlight, this third in the Christian Concepts Series: Timeless Truths and Contemporary Perspectives.

Russell's writing brilliantly develops a living theology that results in a dynamic discipleship. Each of the short chapters of God Light: Sunlight Sonlight includes well-thought-out truths from unique themes on: The character of God, the attributes of God, an overview of light in scripture, reactions to light, images, distortions, and special properties of light.

Russell helps the reader assimilate these truths through profound questions in a section titled "Think and Grow" at the end of each chapter. I appreciate the new insight into Christ as the Light of the Word, shedding "illumination" on the duel character of God as "light and love."

God Light identifies fascinating parallels between natural and spiritual light, contrasts the natural and spiritual light of the world, and illustrates applications of natural and spiritual light. Analogies teach profound truth in simple language. Written in short, easily digestible segments, it is ideal reading for the person on the go.

The reader will understand the statements God is light, The Light of the World, and Christians are to shine like lights in a profound way. God Light is part of the "Christian Concepts Series," presenting Timeless Truths with a Contemporary Perspective.

This series enlightens, exhorts, edifies, encourages, and entertains.

Dr Earl D Radmacher, the General Editor of the New | King James Study Bible, says of God Light:

"There is a tremendous need for a book on this subject. We have witnessed the publication of many books around the statement 'God is Love,' but I cannot recall ever seeing one around the statement 'God is Light.' It is important that these two attributes of God be brought into conjunction with each other because it is really impossible to discuss love intelligently without understanding light."

And Elizabeth Hightower, the Women's Ministries Leader at Laurelwood Baptist Church in Washington, says:

"This is truly are amazing. I marvel at the wisdom God has given you and the talent to put it on paper in a meaningful/fascinating way. I have anything but a scientific mind! I found myself saying out loud, 'Wow, that's amazing,' many times. I worked through the technical only to be thrilled by the application at the end of each chapter. The parallel of God and His Son to the sun is brilliant! I know it's in God's Word but you have brilliantly explored His message and made it meaningful to an 'un-brilliant' person such as myself!

"You have opened my eyes to the light around me. Yesterday, as I looked at the clouds casting shadows on the earth, I thought of the truths you have taught me. I look at ordinary things differently. I have already used many of the truths in my mentoring and find myself sharing your thoughts in everyday conversation.
